I know there are things you don’t like about me. But I don’t apologize for who I am. Dara strolled into the lawn, had she been anyone else her heels would have sunk into the ground as it was she had practice with heels. She strolled toward her favorite tree a book in her hand. It was doubtful that she would actually read with all the grass around her. As soon as she reached her spot she kicked off her shoes doing a perfect pirouette to the music in her head. She twirled around a little bit more feeling the grass beneath her toes before falling gracefully to the ground, laughing.
She lay on the ground looking up at the sky. There were several clouds as usual but no living thing flew above the castle. She sighed softly raising up a hand to shield her eyes from the sun. a figure was off in the distance but she simply assumed it was one of her nurse maids that followed her around like a lost puppy. She rarely had supervision within the castle but she was on the grounds after all.

At the moment, Valeriu was bored out of his mind with his time spent contemplating what to do to get rid of it. He would’ve settled for the usual and picked a book in the castle library but decided otherwise. A person could only take so much reading in a day and besides, he felt like he had been cooped up inside the Vladescu castle walls for far too long. What Valeriu needed most right now was air, fresh cool air. With that thought, the young prince started directing himself towards the outside. He could go for a small walk or doze off underneath a tree for a little while; it didn’t matter much to him. As soon as his feet hit grass and he felt the cool air caress his skin, he let out a breath of relief. It was days like this that made him feel like he was without worries. Continuing forward, he immediately noticed a tiny yet very familiar figure lying on the grass up ahead. Who else could it possibly be other than the youngest of the Vladescu children?
Mia or his parents, it was hard for him to imagine. The idea of a servant positioned in a similar position to his sister on the grass was laughable in his eyes. Running his hand through his hair, he advanced towards her in a calmly fashion while taking the time to notice his surroundings. Stopping beside her head, his body towered over her laying body while blocking her sun. Tilting his head forward slightly, he raised an eyebrow at her while feeling his lips stretch into a pleasant smile. “What are you up to, little lady?”, he asked with a hint of curiosity lacing his tone. Valeriu had noticed the book by her but didn’t bother to mention it seeing as it was sitting there unopened and untouched. Knowing her, she’d eventually get to it. The male could say that she loved reading as much as he did. Often times, Valeriu found it humorous how his past feelings towards his little sister tilted towards irritation and frustration. Now aside from the random bouts of self-centeredness, he wished that she would never change or lose that aura of carefree and bubbly happiness that she seemed to carry around with her everywhere. Without another thought, he sat down beside her, grabbed the book and started flipping through the pages. He was possibly invading her privacy but he'd give her the task of shooing him away when she saw fit, even if it was in the next five seconds.

I know there are things you don’t like about me. But I don’t apologize for who I am. Dara focused on the approaching figure not feeling the least bit weary as to who they might be. She trusted that they meant her no harm, and unlike her older sister who would have tensed at the individual she simply squinted trying to see if it was her Papa. The figure walked with grace but he didn’t have the menacing aura Lucius usually did and it was obviously male so she decided that it was her older brother Valeriu. She grinned broadly as she walked up beside her head blocking the sun. “Perfect Riu! – Don’t move I don’t want to tan” she said with a smile and the smallest giggle. Riu, as she so affectionately called him, had changed his attitude toward her, something that made her smile. She loved not having to hide how bubbly she felt around him.
He sat beside her and she pouted lightly that her shade was gone before sitting up next to him with a smile. He was flipping through her book, which was all about the other Royal Vampire Familes, her conversation with Mia had intrigued her and she wanted to know more. Also, since Riu was the heir he no doubt knew something that she didn’t about the new comers. She watched him for a while longer before finally answering his initial question. “Nothing much, didn’t feel like being indoors it’s too nice today. Then Mia wouldn’t really talk to me, she’s in one of her moods again and if I want to be yelled at I could go to Mama and tell her how I ruined yet another pair of ballerina slippers by skipping through puddles. – What about you?” she asked her older brother. Dara had never been brought up with secrets, the only thing that was kept from her was the origin of Mia’s scar and so she knew nothing of keeping secrets from her family.

The difference in mannerism when approached by a person between his two younger sisters was evident in Valeriu’s eyes. Dara was much too trusting of everyone around her while Mihaela was the exact opposite. He, on the other hand, felt like he was right in between where both girls should be, or at least Dara. Valeriu couldn’t blame Mia for thinking the way she did, especially after everything she’s been through. He didn’t know when or how the topic of her past became taboo within the castle walls but he went along with it. It was a touchy subject, one that he did not like to think about at all. Yes, the two younger Vladescu children were practically polar opposites in their personalities. “As much as I would love to help you little sister, I rather not spend the rest of the evening stiff as a tree. You could always go back inside if the sun is being such a bother,” he replied casually with a small smile on his face.
While he left Dara to her thoughts, the male tried to position himself comfortably before reading the front cover of her book. Valeriu didn’t notice her movements since he was too focused on wondering why she chose that specific topic when there were others that he found more appropriate for her. She couldn’t possibly know about the Fortescue’s, could she? To this day, she still didn’t know how Mia got her scar all those years ago so it had to be some other reason. Valeriu’s attention returned to his sister at the sound of her voice. “Again? At least you knew better to leave her alone this time,” he stated with a frown on his lips. He disliked it very much whenever Mihaela was in one of her moody dispositions, which happened more often than not. It was difficult to get through to her and unless he found it important, Valeriu didn’t like the idea of pushing her out of her comfort zone. His mood then lifted at the sight of Dara’s slippers. With a faint smile and shake of his head, he replied “I can’t say I blame mother. You go through your shoes faster than anyone I know. And nothing really, I came out for a walk and saw you. You don’t mind spending time with your big brother, do you?” He hoped not. If so, he was leaving with her book.

I know there are things you don’t like about me. But I don’t apologize for who I am. Dara shook her head vigorously at the mention of going back inside. “It’s way to stuffy inside there is a dreadful gloom hanging over that place today. No one pays any attention to me except for the nurses and that’s only because they’ll be punished I if I get hurt.” she told her older brother. She wondered briefly what would happen if she were to be kidnapped. Her father would no doubt be furious – she wondered if Mia would miss her. “Fine Riu let me burn to a crisp when I have a horrible sun burn it’ll be entirely your fault.” she told him playfully. The truth was that Dara hardly ever tanned, her skin always stayed pale and radiant.
Dara watched his curious face and was slightly upset. She figured that he thought she didn’t know what was going on in her own land. “I pay attention to other people sometimes Riu – the Fortesque’s are here because of the purge I’m learning more about them because I figure Momma and Papa will invite them over soon. It’s customary as they’re visiting Royalty after all.” she said. She knew how to behave – in the eyes of outsiders she was the perfect specimen of a princess, sweet and delicate and a little soft. It wasn’t entire true she was smart and could be mean if she needed to be after all Lucius Valdescu’s blood ran through her veins. “If looks could kill I’d be ten feet under. I swear she looked exactly like Papa last time. I’m not a masochist.” she told her brother. At least she could talk to one of her siblings.
She looked over at her shoes at the same instant he did and smiled. They were utterly useless now but that was beyond the point. She would send Dorota, her favorite nurse maid, to go buy her new ones tomorrow – Antanasia need not know. “Well the puddle looked inviting it was begging me to splash it with a twirl.” the thirteen year old told him with a slight shrug. “Of course not Riu – that is as long as you swear not to tell Mom about the shoes.” she told him with a smile.

Valeriu tilted his head away from his sister for a moment to roll his eyes after hearing her comment. As cute and adorably annoying as she could be, Dara did tend to be a bit of an attention hog sometimes. He wasn’t going to say anything about it though as he turned his head back to her. He did however have to agree with her. The male had found it stuffy inside but he had failed to notice or find the cause of it. Perhaps he had been too self-absorbed with his thoughts then but he was alert at this moment. “Speaking of you getting hurt, did you at least inform one of your nurses of your whereabouts before coming out here? You know how mother and father feel about that.” It wasn’t of his intention to put a damper on things but safety did come first. The last thing he wanted was a repeat of the Mia fiasco, especially on their grounds. It was unlikely but it wasn’t impossible either.
He let out a laugh at her words and replied teasingly, “Well then, let me know when that happens and I’ll be sure to have a bottle of Aloe cream waiting for you in your room. You can’t say I don’t know how to care of you.” He doubted that she was even capable of getting a sun burn. From all the times she had spent outside, he never recalled in the last thirteen years ever seeing her skin darken from its natural pale color. At the change of topic, the shift in his sister’s mood was evident as he listened to her every word, his own thoughts being formulated into words. “I never said you didn’t, Dara. I simply figured you weren’t interested in such things. I do apologize if I’ve upset you. Though I have to know, how did you find out about the Fortescue’s?’ Valeriu had honestly thought that she was out of the loop concerning that matter but he had been wrong. She was thirteen years old now and no longer the little girl that he kept thinking her to be. He needed to remember that. The male remained silent at the mention of the middle Vladescu child. Mihaela was truly too much like their father. He wondered what had pushed her into such a foul mood but didn’t voice it out.
Valeriu smiled at her childishness and reasoning. He remembered all the times he had done the same and then while he grew up, jumping into puddles had morphed into swimming. “I’m hurt, Dara. Since when do you apply conditions for me to spend time with you? I’m your only brother, you know? But don’t worry, I won’t tell mother a thing... unless asked,” he told her with a smirk. In all seriousness, he really wasn’t going to tell on her. Valeriu knew how to keep a secret and unless he found it a possible threat to his family, he’d take it to the grave no matter how trivial the content.

I know there are things you don’t like about me. But I don’t apologize for who I am. Dara sighed heavily “I briefly mentioned it to someone but like I said everyone was ignoring me but so I don’t know if they paid attention.” She had briefly mentioned it to Dorota this morning that she was considering going out to the grounds. She hadn’t said when or if she was but the way she saw it her part had been done. Besides it was vastly annoying to be followed around like she was a child, she wasn’t -- at least not all the time. “I don’t need a baby sitter all the time you know. What’s going to happen -- I’m gonna fall out of another tree again?” asked the thirteen year old ignorant of the incident that had happened to Mia.
Dara stuck her tongue out to him before giggling slightly she scooted over to be closer to him. Riu was one of her favorite people – he was the only one she could tell everything too and she missed him at times when he was at college or busy. “I’m taking your word for it.” she told him knowing that it was long shot that she would even tan slightly. “Why does everyone think I don’t care?” she asked no longer upset. Dara’s moods went as rapidly as they came and a simple apology would make the young girl happy again. “Mia told me there were new students in her school and then mentioned they were vampires. Papa and Momma have been in meetings all day and so I put two and two together to get the Fortescue’s” she told him.
Dara gasped playfully and shoved him lightly. “You would see your little sister murdered by her mother. You’re a monster Riu!” she said with a laugh. She knew that Riu wouldn’t tell on her, her brother was trust worthy and great. “What do you know about the Fortescues?” she asked him curious as to what the older boy knew.

Valeriu eyed his sister skeptically, "Oh? Are you telling me that you barely tried to gain their attention? That doesn't sound very much like you, Dara." He wasn't necessarily happy with her response, his face showing his disapproval but he wasn't going to condemn her for it either. She wasn't outside on her own since he was there with her but had it been otherwise, her actions showed anything but prudence. The male let out a scoff at her next words, his eyes glaring at her for a moment. "And you don't believe falling out of a tree warrants the need for a babysitter? You shouldn't take things in life so lightly, young lady. I'd hate for something to happen to you... like not learning your lesson the first time and falling yet again out of another tree." She was so naive and at times like this, he wondered if their father had done the right thing by sheltering her from the harsh realities of life.
He found her to be childish too at times but her childishness and innocence were some of aspects of her that he classified as both annoying and endearing. It made it somewhat difficult for him to be or stay angry with her. Valeriu eyed her face closely while he contemplated hard to her next question. He shrugged and replied truthfully, "Why wouldn't they? You're the baby of the family, the little princess. Why should you concern yourself with such matters at your age when you should be enjoying your childhood?" While he listened to her words, he started flipping through the pages of the book in search of the Fortescue family history. "I see. Did she tell you anything else? Did she talk to them?", he asked but his eyes never leaving the pages.
The male let out an exaggerated sighed and placed an arm around his little sister's shoulder. "If I must, then I must. Mother does know best. At least I have thirteen years worth of memorable moments to remember you by. Should be good enough for you, yes?" he teased. Placing his arm back to his side, he refrained from messing up her hair midway. Dara wanted to know about the Fortescues then fine, he'd appease her curiosity. However, Valeriu can't be blamed if she ended up not liking the answer he'd provided her. "What you just told me now... and perhaps a bit more," was all he said and at that, he ended that conversation. Valeriu had no plans of telling her about them, no matter how much she asked. If she wanted answers, she'd have to go their parents.
